How do you put a speedo on a 400ex?
#4
Will the speedo you bought work with any tire size? On your 400ex you can mount the sensor on the plastic cover on the brake caliper and for the magnet you can use any nagnet and epoxy it to the back side of the front spindle You have to take the spindle and the rotor to do this. Look at the pictures of mine on my web page

Cory,
A bike speedo is pretty easy to configure. Just follow the instructions that come with the speedo. Really, they are pretty easy to follow. To get to your question though; measure the circumference of your tire or if your tape won't bend like that just roll your tire forward for one revolution. Be sure you marked the stating and ending point so you can measure it. You'll get a more accurate reading, however, if you actually measure the tire (tape measure around the outside of your tire). Then, look on the chart that came with the speedo instructions and enter the number they give you which correlates to your tire measurement--simple as that. I just read in the Yamaha posting last week about a guy who mounted his speedo on his sprocket. He used a wired (instead of wireless) speedo. Although the work required would be more, a wired speedo would be the way to go. Unless these speedos have advanced, a wireless speedo needs line of sight to pick up readings from the sensor. Have no idea how you could mount a wireless on your quad and maintain line of sight....unless you had a really big drill. You might not be riding your quad afterwards either. Good luck.

Kirk_d4 has a mountain bike speedo on his 400EX and it was done without any drilling or mods to the bike at all. All you have to do is take the front wheel of and you can do it all from their.

Looking down at a speedometer while riding on a 400ex doesn't sound like a great idea. Sample story, "Dude, look I was almost doing 70 when this tree just sorta appeared right there in front of my quad! It musta jumped right out in fronta me! Totally wrecked the bike, but I'll heal in about 8 weeks though."
I rode an 1100cc yamaha WaveRaider (Smaller WaveRunner) for about four hours before I even realized it had a speedometer. Ever done 67 mph over the water? On a waverunner that would rather follow every contour of the waves in front of you, rather than where you are trying to steer.
What a rush!!!

If you have enough wire on the speedo sensor its easier to mount it on the sprocket, but it reads every time the wheel spins so it isn't that accurate way. I had to lengthen the wire on the sensor when I installed mine. The distance that the magnet and sensor are mounted away from the center of the wheel doesn't mater at all, the sensor just reads how fast it is turning then the circumference of the tire tells the speedo how far you have traveled.
