Newbie needs guidance on High Altitude carb adjustment
Folks,
I need some help. I purchased a '03 Rancher 4x4 ES. It will be predominately used in an area where the elevation is 2,700 to 5,000' (sometimes as high as 6,000' but rarely). I've read the Honda manual which states:
"Above 3,000' a rich mixture can cause driveability problems, reduce engine performance and increase fuel consumption. To compensate, you can have the carburetor adjusted for high altitude riding. However the carburetor must be returned to factory specifications before riding again at lower altitudes (below 5,000'). Sustained riding at lower elevations with the lean high altitude settings may cause rough idling, stalling or engine damage from overheating".
I'm confused on what I should do. The dealer I bought it from is at sea level and thought I'd solicit opinions from all of you first. I can't imagine folks are constantly installing and adjusting when they are travelling with their ATV's, or do they? Would you have a suggestion if I should leave mine at the factory setting?
Thanks for your insights. Joe

Also, see http://www.thunderproducts.com/ They have a slotted insert for the airbox lid ("tpi valve"), that can be adjusted with altitude. Plus, you can just close the slot during a water crossing (nice!). I plan to switch to this system when I get a chance!!!!

we're at 4000' here and ride as high as 6000'. i cut a hole in the top of the airbox slightly smaller than a piece of duct tape. no tape for high alt [more air] if i go down the hill, a piece of tape goes on the hole. presto! stock jetting.
