i am going to sell my warrior and buy a 400ex until next year when i will be getting the new yamaha. i want to know if $3500 is a good price on a 440ex with a cam, handlebars, ac front bumper-swingarm skid and chassis skid, seat cover, lightened flywheel, new axle bearings supertrapp pipe and new clutch with springs. it also has like new razrs front and rear. plastic is in good shape. he said he was selling it because of lack of time to ride.

what kind of hp will i be looking at with this setup. what is lightenig the flywheel, and what are the benefits.

Heck yeah, if it runs good it's well worth it. What year is it? Make sure and test ride it and open it up on a pretty good run to see how it acts and sounds. Make sure it isn't vibrating to pieces and listen to the motor. If it runs good it is easily worth $3500, with the mods it's probably at least a $6000 bike, which kind of makes you wonder about the price but like I said if it runs good get it. I would think it is making around 40hp or a little more, I'm not sure. The 440ex's are great racers and you can win at the track if this sucker runs right. Did he race mx or anything? If so this bike has probably been through the ringer, but that doesn't mean it won't still run great. Good luck.

umm, well. a stock 400EX brand new is over $5500. so if its in good shape I think you are capable of answering that.

no he didnt race. its a 99. i found two others one for 34 and one for 28 hundred both 99s and both are 440s. but one lives in georgia and the other lives in pennsylvania. the one in penn is the 2800 one. if the mods on that one are better or even close to what the guy with the 3500 one has on his i will drive up to check it out. georgia would be alittle to far to drive. but the one that is 3500 is only about an hour from where i live so i am leaning toward that one.

Gee mudslinger if you think thats worth 6k I have a national race ready 440 mxer you would really like for the same money. I do think that bike sounds good for $3500 though if the motor still sounds good, no rattles or knocks.

It's a good deal if it's not beat, regardless of it's state of tune. HP can be anywhere from 33 to maybe and I mean maybe 40. If it's a do it yourself low compression IMS kit, mild cam with the Supertrap and no head/valve work it's probably more like 33 maybe even lower. The torque will still be excellent. To get real HP out of the 440's you need high compression, proper valve/headwork, big carb [I liked the FCR 39] race cam and exhaust system like a Sparks X-6 and of course a high flow filter and box mods.

I was going to say almost the same thing as trx440 but he beat me to the punch. I wish we could say it would have 50 HP but the 400 is to weak for that. I love mine to death but it just dosnt have all the power it could.

Oh and with the lightening of the fly wheel: It allows the motor to rev faster because it takes weight off the drive train. It can also help to let the engine start easier with higher compression and bigger bores.

I wasn't sure about the price, I was thinking about $5000 for the quad, I guess I was thinking a new 400ex is around $5500 and this one was used but I didn't know what year so I was guessing on the high side. I would think a 1999 400ex with low miles or hours would at least cost $3000 to $3500 without the mods. I know a z400 450kit costs around $2000 so I guessed that the 440kit for the ex was at least $1200 to $1800. Plus it has skid plates, razr tires, and a pipe. Did you say you wanted $6000 for your national racer. I'm just going to reinforce my z frame, get some suspension work, and turn it into a 450 and get a bigger carb. TRX440 how much horsepower do you think that bike has, once again I just guessed but you have one and know more about it. I know you said it had maybe 33hp, I didn't take into account that the guy buying it didn't say if it had a bigger carb or anything. I know a z400 with a 450 kit, and a larger carb will make over 47hp. What do you think would be the absolute most hp you could get out of the 400ex motor and keep it somewhat reliable? I'm not sure about the z but I know that getting the 47 horses that dirtwheels got was supposed to have been fairly easy. I have heard it's possible to get way over 60hp for the new yfz450.

I have no idea what kind of power that bike has. You can build a budget 440 for peanuts. The sleeve and piston are under $300. You can throw a 12.5:1 stock bore piston along with a K&N, rejet, and a cdi that would make a much faster bike. If you don't plan on racing AMA legal classes, you can run a stroker/89mm [and all of the other engine mods] that will make @ 50hp but you have to spend alot of money to upgrade the other drive components to keep up with the new hp and you will lose reliability. I personally think high hp 400's are for weekend warriors and duners, you have to find a happy medium with the 400's between hp and reliability. If you want a 400ex to last, keep the hp around 40-42 or plan on alot of upkeep and continued spending. A well built Sparks 440 [mx] will make north of 45hp but that's a highly tuned and expensive engine.

BTW, WELL built CRF450/YZ450F mx bikes are not breaking the 55hp barrier right now. If you want 60hp, get a Raptor or a DS and start spending.
