Hello there my neighbors to the north! I don't want to talk college football, lets keep this amicable. Especially since I'm looking for some info on sand dunes in Michigan. Myth or fact? Where are they and have you ridden them?

Buckeye, Silver Lake sand dunes is the only sand dune area that I know of in Michigan that is open to ATVs. I have never been to the sand dunes out west so I can't compare it to them. It's not a huge area but it is quite picturesque being on the shores of Lake Michigan. There is a state campground nearby that get used by a lot of people there to ride the dunes; the dunes are actually part of that state park.

As far as what the dunes themselves are like- There about six very large dunes back to back as you come into the riding area. The first of these is called Test Hill. A lot of people line up to watch the action here. Its no trouble getting up Test hill on a ATV but the trucks have a hell of time. Its fun to watch them get stuck part way up or get high centered.

There is a drag race area in the center of the dunes. The sand is flat and damp there. On the weekends you'll find a big crowd of spectators and racers. People just line up and go at the flag- most often there are four to ten vehicles racing the same time. I've seen some wild machines out there; several ATV's with 4 cyl street bike engines, but mostly they're tricked out Banshees.

There is also a very large beach area where I like to take a break at. You can find out more about the park if you do a search on "Silver Lake sand dunes".
