Default hotcam for 400 ex ?s

A 99 400 ex with k&N filter, no lid, fmf powerbomb pipe.
Stage 1 or 2, what would give the best performane for dune riding, and drag racing?
Do you need a cdi to raise the rev limiter? Is there a problem with hiting the rev limiter?
How much of an increase in performance will it give?
How hard is it to install? Any other parts needed?
Best price you know of?

I think they recommend stage 1 for stock engines and stage 2 for modified engines with high compression. Stage 1 has more bottom and stage 2 has more mid-top.

The instructions for the install are on the hotcams site. Ignore the part about pressing on the flange.

I've seen them on ebay for $99 and on sale for $109 but usually around $125

i am running the same mods as you except r-4 pipe and uni filter. i am also running the stage 2 and man it makes my quad pull really hard, especially for a stock bore quad! i highly reccomend the stage 2. i can smoke Z's with ease now, and i can even beat raptors usually too.

installation isn't that hard but you definatley have have some know how. the hardest part is keeping the timing right. if your not good at that kind of stuff have a pro do it. i have never raved a piped raptor but it would probably destroy me. stock is not too big of a worry for me tho. if we start out even i can take the race.

I just put a stage II hotcam in mine. I can keep up with most 250r's in a dragrace and thats more than I expexted. Get a manual, copy the instructions from the hotcam website, get a torque wrench, assembly lube, anti-seize, readjust the exhaust valves when done, make sure engine is on true tdc when installing cam and adjusting the valves. Take your time. If you want it now, take it to a shop. My cylinder head bolts were put on to tight when we installed the 440 and I had to use easy outs. Not fun when your wanting to ride. So be sure to use a torgue wrench and anti-seize. This motor rips. I do have a wb rev kit on mine. Why have a topend cam when your cdi box limits your top end. If your clutch goes out, consider a hinson or something, I have one and have had no problems since. I also have a full exhaust system. The only problem I have now is keeping my front end down on a start! Oh yea, most of the 250r's I have drag raced were not stock so have fun!

Did you notice a big loss on the bottom with the stage 2 with the stock bore, Are you running stock compression?
