my xr200(dirt bike) just started smoking alittle this month and only does it when the motor is cold but when it warms up it stops smoking. Could it be the rings or what. if it is the rings how hard is it to put new ones in. any kind of advice would be nice to have. the reason I am needing the advice is because i am selling it soon. thanks

 

sounds like the valve seats, no need to worry about the smoking unless it occurs all the time. then it is time to re-ring and put in new oil seals. also try to use a lead additive every 3 or so tanks of gas this will help quite a bit.

 

thanks mojave, some one told me today that the valves just might need setting.

 

no problem. i really wouldn't much worry about fixing this, it isn't like there is any performance loss or anything. this problem always occur when 4 stroke engines start to get more hours on them. just sell as is and tell the person the valves or not seating 100% it wont hurt anything it is just a little smoke for the warmup period. dry a different weight oil when selling it then it wont smoke.

 

what weight oil should i use, now I have 20w-50 in it.

 

that is already fairly heavy weight normally a heavier weight oil will smoke less though.
