What is better the standard shift or the electric shift. I heard the electric shift on the 450s don't work the great and always break. But most people I talk to say that they are perfect on the Rancher's. Is it true.

What i heard, they are good on the rancher's.

i couldn't get past the reliability issue when i was trying to decide so i bought a Rancher 4x4 manual and put the ES floorboards on it. no regrets so far.

I OWN A 4X2 RANCHER, WAS LEARY ABOUT THE ELECTRIC SHIFT AND NEVER TRIED ONE.SO I TEST DROVE BOTH AT THE DEALER,AND WAS SOLD ON THE ELECTRIC SHIFT.I HAD IT FOR 3 MONTHS NOW AND HAVE NO PROBLEMS.I WISH I COULD PUT IT ON MY EX400.I ALSO READ ABOUT IT ON THE FOREMANS WHERE GUYS SUNK THEM IN WATER&MUD AND HAD NO PROBLEMS.I AM FROM THE OLD SCHOOL WHERE EXTRA GADGETS ARE EXTRA PROBLEMS,BUT WOULD NOT DO WITH OUT THIS ONE!

For a couple of hundred dollars in price you get the cool LCD & nice floor boards to keep the mud off of you.

My ES is 2 months old with 250 miles & not one problem with it. Some of the original ES units that came out on the 450's had a current drain problem which Honda corrected. I haven't seen any problems relating to the Rancher & its ES.

500 miles and 6 months of trouble free riding on my es. No question in my mind that I would do it over again and get the es.

2100 klm (approx. 1700 mi. )on my ES no trouble at all in the cold , mud, or water. Gotta love it for hill climbing and quick shifts when running the mud holes. Definitely easier to use if you live in cold areas where you are required to wear heavy footwear.

I have a 450ES and love the electric shift. I only have 120 miles but they have been hard ones so far and no regrets. Most of the guys I ride with have ES's and no complaints with them either. Just think of all you get for a measly 200 bucks. Electric shift, floorboards, and a cool LCD. Hell the LCD alone is worth the money. Just my two cents worth.

i have seen several posts about the use of the es system, the bottom line seems to be this; if you have ever owned a bike with the es system you can't live without it. if you have yet to get one yu seem to be leary and worry about reliability issues. i owned a 99 450es for six months and then bought a rancher4x2 es in november of last year. in my view the es is one of the best innovations for atv's. it is much easier in mud and water as well as hill climbing. plus it just makes you lazy, its too easy just to push a button while you ride. also you might be aware you not only lose floorboards and the lcd, but you also do not get a fan assisted oil cooler on the rancher 4x2 s model. that could hurt the life of you engine in the long run. i guess my point is this if you buy one i don't think you will ever regret it...
