2000 400ex carb question
#1
A friend just added to our riding group he just bought a 400ex. I remember seeing a post about the factory throttle cable setting. They said that the slide does not open up all the way on the 400ex. They said to adjust the cable to get the slide to open up. The post was for a 99 400ex. Does the same apply for the 2000 400ex. i searched the posts but could not find it. Also how many hours before the first valve adjustment.

Mine needed to be adjusted. You can see it if you take off the air box (entirely), including the black air-intake tube leading from the air cleaner to the carburetor. Look inside while wicking the throttle. You should see the black throttle valve going up and down. You will also notice that it will not fully disappear when giving it gas. Adjust the throttle (while holding the throttle wide open at the thumb-throttle) until it disappears. Start it up and be sure it idles, etc. I didn't have to readjust mine at all afterwards. The bike ran fine and idled fine.
As for your next questions regarding the valves. There is no specified interval for actually adjusting the valves. Honda recommends that you inspect the valves at 20hrs/100mls, 100hrs/600mls, and 200hrs/1,200mls. If they are knocking noticeably, inspect them and adjust them when the bike is cold.
