JohnnySplat is correct.

The 250EX has front disc brakes opposed to drums and the rear end is also slightly different on the 250EX because there is a mounting hole missing that the recon has for the available trailer hitch.

i really dont know how closely related the two are, but i can tell you that honda has definately been able to extract more power from their new 250 recon than a late 80's 250, just because engine technology has improved so much in that time. i suppose they could have that 250 fourtrax geared higher though, so your top speed could be similar or slightly better, but torque/hp wise i would say the recon probably puts out a little more.

That's a good point. Does anyone here have the gear ratios of the recon?
