Default Help! ATV Submerged Today...

Today my 4 wheeler went under water up to about the handlebars...I jumped off real quick and jerked the tailpipe out and I think maybe just a little bit of water (if any) got in it. I drained the air box that was full of water and dried the filters the best I could and have been ridin it all day and it hasn't missed a beat...is there anything that I need to do that might cause it damage? The water was muddy. Thanks

Just to be safe, you might want to look at your oil and the diff fluids. If any water got into those you'll need to drain and change them out.

Shined a light into the crankcase.... you shouldn't expect to see water, oil floats on top of water. If you notice the oil as frothy, then the engine has been running on an oil/water emulsion, which has no lubrcating properties.

It is an 04, and lack of lubrication caused by water in the oil from submerging is not covered by warranty..... I know what I would do -> change the oil.

I would have to agree with BSA. It is much better to be safe than sorry. Plus, the oil change is only a few bucks. Don't forget to change the filter too.

You should change the oil at least two or three times. Make sure it doesn't look clowdy.

Make sure you clean and re-oil your air filter.

They are right, change your fluids.
Also, lube everything.
If some of your suspension piviots don't have fittings, pull the piviot bolts and grease them.
I am telling you after learning the hard way.

I have done the same thing. Being that I am a mechanic for 15 years but still not a genious here is what I suggest.
1) After you get it to dry land pull the spark plug and turn the engine over. Pistons don't compress water too well.
2)Definately give a good visual inspection of all fluids. Anything that looks milky white is bad!!
3)Try not to ride it out of the woods, get a tow and replace all fluids and filters before riding again. Is $30.00 worth of parts worth a $6000.00 machine.
I completly flooded my engine so it was easy to tell but after doing these things 600 miles later it purrs like a kitten. I figure always better to be safe than sorry!!!!
