Help....

Is there a simple modification that can be made so I can start it in gear. Going back to neutral every time I shut it off is a pain.

That is a really dumb question! ou cant just do that youll mess up everythang. going back to neutral shouldnt b 2 hard if u have the esp ( Electric shift program) which u do have....

I had a Honda Foreman ES that I modified to start in any gear. I sure wish I'd kept my notes on how I did it, as lots of folks wanted to do that. Being able to start in any gear is sure a needed feature, as I found on the trails when I got stuck and couldn't get the ESP to get back to neutral. I do recall that it was not an easy solution, asi it required adding a wire to the ESP module under the headlight. I thought maybe Honda had relaxed their resistance to starting in any gear by requiring the rider to have the brakes on, but I guess they didn't. Anyway, it isn't a "dumb request"!

 

Well the Honda 500 and 650 can start in gear (foreward only) you have to hold in the right brake lever

 

Not sure if that would work on the Ranchers, some don't have a brake switch for the brake light, some Foreman's do.

 

So if you shut it off in 5th then start it back up in 5th you still have to down shift to 2nd to get decent acceleration. Right?
And why the hell don't the ranchers have brake lights? It's the only legal way to right at night in Michigan (and/or other states.)

 

the 2004 rancher DOES have brake lights , nice and bright.
activated by front or rear brake ,
but it will not start in gear, regardless of brake application

Well, maybe the 2004 Rancher does have brake lights, but the original question was about a 2002, and I also said SOME Ranchers don't have brake lights, I never said all. My Rancher was bought in good ol' Canada, maybe the wiring was different. Who knows.... Man.

 

That starting in gear thing I don't find to be a problem on my ES, But on S models that my buddies ride there are times that it would be handy. Sometimes when you get high centered, you can't down shift. I have seen it happen lots. I think that is why Yamaha put the start in gear thing on their bikes. Sure wish someone new how to incorporate that into the honda S models.
