need advise on good mud tires
#12
I normally classify them in three groups.
1. Trail & Mud
2. Agressive
3. Super Agressive
The one you want depends on what you want it for, and how much ride comfort and power loss you care to account for.
The first group of tires is like Bear Claws, Blackwaters, Sur Traks, and Spider Tracs. Stuff like that which is a good riding trail tire that still does pretty good in mud. Better traction than stock with little if any power loss and a good ride.
The second group is like Mud Bugs (which are borderline), Blackwater XT's, and Mudrunners (depending on the size). These are a little rougher riding than stock (not too bad in most cases though), and sap out a little more power than stock. I put tires in this class with a 1" lug. Much more traction than stock and very good in mud. Probably the best median as far as having great mud traction with little sacrifice for power or ride comfort.
The third class is basically tires with a 1.25" lug or greater. Vampires, Tri/Bi-Claws, Outlaws, Titan 589's, and maybe even the larger Mudrunners (I don't know how deep the lug is on them). These ride a good bit rougher, and are heavier requiring more power to turn them. 27" size minimum here. Outstanding traction in mud and other conditions. Big nasty tires in other words. The 28" outlaw fits here as well. The 28" Vampire fits in its own "Ludicrously Aggressive" category due to its massive 2" lugs that I deem unaceptable for anything other than swampland. My chiropractor bill would be through the roof if I had them.
