400ex stock exhaust mod
#1
Hi, i am going to try to mod my stock exhaust tonight... I took out the whole end of the pipe (the spark arrester), and took a look at it.. Could someone give me some help on this? how am i supposed to get the screen out? do i cut the whole baffle out leaving just a screen? also what is the best way to re-apply the screen? will this mod make it sound better? and, will i lose any power if i do this? help would be appreciated, LATER, RIDE HARD

Yea, this has been addressed before... I modded my stock exhaust by removing the end cap, and then had a friend remove the spark arrestor by grinding off the spot welds. He then cut off the restrictor leaving enough metal to re-weld the spark arrestor back on. I can't say if it increased power...if it did I don't feel it...but the exhaust note is a little deeper and louder. Sounds more powerful if nothing at all...

Hello,I did mine an it works great ,you need the screen on it for the spark arrester an you need to take the baffle out ,it's stainless steel so it's hard after that just use a few screws an reattatch the screen sure helps it flow easier.

If you're talking about just removing the restrictor from the end cap, and not the internal packing of the muffler, then I wouldn't think you'd need to rejet. Like I said, removing the restrictor doesn't make a huge difference, and I really doubt it's flowing a whole lot more than the stock set up. Keep an eye on the plug though (my disclaimer statement)...

I am kind of confused as to what is what for this mod. I have three pictures. If someone could tell me what is the baffle, restrictor and spark arrestor, I'd appreciate it.

hi, i delayed my stock mod thing, and decided to research it... if you take a good look at the setup... the hole that the air goes out is futher into the pipe.. therefore once the exhaust is ejected from the muffler, it actually created a little pressure... because it has to travel the length of the baffle before it can escape.. so by removing the baffle would that make your quad lose "pump down"??? i may not know what i am talking about.. or is pump down generated from a compartment closer to the headpipe in the muffler? can someone plz help me out? has anyone done this to a 400EX?? cuz it might have different results for a 400 and a 300.. thanks for the replies..

Do a search using Pam's username, "PamFalcioni", in either the Honda or Performance forum (I think it's the Performance forum)...and look for a thread concerning modding the end cap. I know the procedure is different for the 99 400EX--instead requires drilling additional holes vs. cutting out the restrictor.
