The wifes 440ex against a 450 r with hrc kit at the dunes today
#31
14, that is pretty funny, I must admit.
I met a guy out at the dunes this weekend. He had a HRC450R too. I saw him racing a Raptor with a pipe, he beat it pretty good. When he came down the hill, I asked him how he liked it. He told me the week before he was here getting his *** handed to him by everybody. He took it back to the dealer ship and told them to make it faster or they could take it back. They changed some jetting and it really woke it up, he said he had not been beat that day.
Here is my take, the HRC kit comes with one main jet, one needle, and one recommendation for a clip position. So I think everybody has the same jetting for different conditons, elevations, and tempratures. When I set mine up, I dropped a size, removed the air box, and figured that I would run her rich to break it in, I have since dropped to a 178. It runs better every time. How many people actually spend some time with the jetting. Hell I know guys who have paid the dealer to jet the quad (see above). There is alot to be had from spending some time and gettign her running right.
There is no way that a z400 with the listed mods, or 440 with listed mods could hang with a properly running 450R. I am not a 450r or bust guy at all, just stating facts. I used to own a 426 ex, with carb, cams, port work, high comp, and have a Z, its not happening.

saw a new 450R with the HRC kit race a Z400 with a Yosh pipe, filter, and jet kit. The Z won every time. This was up Comp Hill at Buttercup on Friday. Riders were same size so weight wasn't a factor. They were both running Haulers. The funny part was that the Honda guy had 8K invested and the Z can be had for $5600 plus the mods. I'm a bit disdappointed that the 450 didn't do better considering its displacement advantage and the HRC parts

Not all yamaha owners talk out their rears, I'm actually quite impressed when a honda or yamaha owner can give an honest review without making a total **** of themselves...... In stock form the 450R has much to be desired, as is the case with most quads...
Regardless of how fast your quad is, if you exhibit that you are an @ss in the forum- there is a 99.9% chance that you are also an @ss in real life. People such as yourself don't provide any real benefit to the forum.

I cant speak against the 450R, nor can I speak for Sand/Hill racing , but I can
speak for 300 ft. dirt drags, with lights. I came up against several yfz450's
in the drag season last year, with my Raptor. All it had was a full Sparks pipe
setup, Proflow adapter with K&N, and the front and rear lowered 4 inches. The
most modded 450 was 13:1, ported, cam modded, piped and lowered. With
both riders the same weight ( 140 lbs), the Raptor edged out the win most of the
times they faced each other - by a mere half a quad length.
Now I assume sand is a different monster, and the high and quick revs, probably
keep the 450 screamin in the sand. But for dirt drags, a properly set up Piped
Raptor can and will beat yfz450, so I assume a Raptor would beat the 450R as well.
( on dirt, 300ft). Also remember, that if you launch a piped Raptor in a race, if you
are not at full throttle, dumping the clutch, in 2nd gear, then no, you probably wont win
Ride one the right way for dragging, and you will Cant wait to see the 450R's this year,
we have alot of Red Riders in this area for sure !

Man you guys with your CRAPTORS, all you talk about is how fast they are in a drag race, who gives a $hit who will win in a drag race. I dont know about you but i get a much better rush jumping double and triples, pounding through the whoops and throw it side ways. Who cares if the 450r loses in a drag race to a craptor(which i dont see that happening anyways) because we all know that is all the CRAPTOR will be good at anyways. Anybody can drag race but not everybody can race around a track with the throttle pinned. Bring those CRAPTORS out to the MX track and see what the R can do to them out there, you might be a little tippy in the corners with your 7 foot seat height. My mom can drag race a quad for crying out loud.

Why do you think honda never responded to the CRAPTOR with a 650ex??? Because they knew the 400ex was still a far superior quad in EVERYTHING but drag racing.

If you want one bad enough in Ca. , then you pay what they want. LA Honda has the best prices in the state, and they are getting $7199 OTD.(checked 10 days ago) Add $300 for the HRC kit, a set of sand tires and you are right at $8k. If I spent that much on a quad that was supposed to be the "end all whoop *** thing" out there, and then got beat by a Z, I'd be defensive and pissed too. Keep in mind I'm talking about the motors. I am quite sure that it is an outstanding handling and well made machine. But if I had a total inveatment of 8k in my Z that I currently have, it would wax a 450. So go out and buy two of them at MSRP, spend up to $8k for total investment on both and then line them up. It really doesn't matter to me because racing up a hill is not the number one thing that I do when I ride. Smoke is smoke and sunshine is sunshine, and they are both getting blown around a lot here. I know what I saw, and what I saw wasn't all that impressive for the money. Sorry you're out all that money for an average machine.
