Major Tranny Problem!!!! 87TRX310R
I have a major problem in my transmission and would greatly appreciate any help.
When shifting from 3rd to 4th gear, the trans starts making light(sometimes light, sometimes hard) banging noises and the shift lever jumps around
like it's posessed! All the other gears work perfectly. When you shift to 4th, it's like there is no gear to be found,
and if it does show up....it feels like it's slipping...even though there are no teeth missing.
If it were not for the fact that i've already tore this thing down once, and found nothing wrong, i'd think it was trashed.
Anyway, I just bought new shift forks and drum and am installing them this week. If anyone has had this happen please let
me know what was wrong with yours. This HONDA has a race to catch in 2 weeks! Thanks in advance for the help!!!!

Replace the gears affected also, don't look for missing teeth- look at the engagement lugs and windows ( in the opposing gear) where the lugs engage. This is where the damage will show, you probably have a bent shift fork causing 4th to not engage fully and the engagement lugs are jumping out of the gear causing the shifter movement/noises. Once the lugs are damaged (rounded off/chipped) it will not want to stay in gear under power. The lugs should be square with sharp edges and the windows in the opposing gear should not be notched/chipped/rounded out.
