first tune up
#1
Im looking at getting a 450s and im under the idea that the dealership that you by you atv from the need to do the first 500 mile tune up other wise it will effect you warrenty. The honda dealerships will stay with out names, but one told me that the first tune up is $90 plus parts. The other dealership a little ways up north told me the only thing that you need is the first oil change done by the dealership which is like $10. so who is right. I just don't want to get ripped off. thanks

I'm not trying to belittle your question, Stitch, but I think "right" is whatever the dealership you choose as an interface between you and Honda tells you. If you have a warranty claim, your dealer must go to bat for you for your claim to be honored. Having paid $5-$6-$7 grand for a quad, a few bucks for initial service (despite what you might think it's REALLY worth) could be considered something of an insurance premium. "Rip-off" or the price of doing business? As a practical matter, you might figure the gain-to-loss ratio of getting squeamish over the initial service fee.

Treefarmer makes a valid point. I paid $135 for my first 20 hour service. The main reason, was to insure the warrenty would stay valid. It is a small price to pay considering what the quad cost you. Once the quad is out of warrenty that a different story.

Stitch,
I have never purchased a quad off the floor. However, I've learned quite a bit about your issue from reading many of these posts. My impression is that you don't have to take your quad to the dealer for “ANY” tune-up to keep your warranty in good standing.
Perhaps I have been misunderstanding the posts that I have been reading, but I think there is a law of some sort to protect you, the purchaser. It covers issues such as yours.
I just don't see how the company could legally hold the purchaser up to such a requirement. I would assume the same laws governing automobiles would govern ATVs as well. With that theory, our automobile warranty is not voided if we do our own work, is it?
Again, this is just speculative thought. Take what I have written and use it as a basis for further research into the matter.
Good luck. If you find anything out, let us know. I am sure others are dealing with similar situations.
