Geez, what a thread.
The z mainly has a few things over the 400ex. More Power, Reverse, Liquid Cooling...
Power - DOHC vs SOHC - While the dohc makes more power, it has less low end torque. Better for drags, not always the best for playing around and trail riding.
Reverse - Nice to have, but not absolutely necessary. Better for a trail machine. (which both can be)
Liquid cooling - An lc engine will make more power than the same engine air cooled. The temps can be regulated easier with lc. But there are drawbacks... Liquid cooling involves hoses, coolant resiviours, a radiator, more lines, and internal impellers. These things add a lot of weight and also can leave you stranded on the trail or in a race if just one goes bad.
The frame on the z is still questionable at best. While the z is seemingly the better machine, it has its downsides.
Reliability is hard to tell as the z has only been out for 2 years while the 400ex has been out since 99. We know the ex engine is solid, and it appears the z's is as well.
Take this into account the next time you tell someone thier honda sucks because its not the fastest.

the only thing the z has over the ex is reverse the end as far as power and tourqe get the h*ll out of here if u think the z has more because i know for a fact a ex will take off a lot harder than the z ive rode both and liked the z but wouldnt buy one because they are not as predictable dont handle as well wont climb as good u hav to rev the p!ss out of them to get them movin i would rather have a quad that out powers handles and last longer than a z that only advantage is that its new and little kids have got to have one so they can tell there mommys that they got the fastest thing in the world

ex has more power than a z???????
you do know we are talking z400 not z250
ive ridden both and i believe the difference in handling is not that much(this is only my opinion)
although the power is quite different (the ex has a pipe and jet kit Z400 is stock)

To be honest, if I could've got a Z for the same price I probably would be riding Suzuki...........the Ozark was my first quad and was very pleased with it. Good job Suzuki!
I like the Z but I do wonder about the frame issues. How can a Z have the extra weight of reverse and liquid cooling and yet weigh 3 lbs. less than the EX? Did they skimp too much on the frames? I think so.
It would be interesting to see what the frame weighs to compare to the EXs.
You guys say, "The Z is more powerful and faster!" <Here lies the problem for me. Take an 04 model of each and two equal riders. Drag race best outta 3 for 300ft. and 900ft. on hard packed sand. I already know the outcome, I did this............... have you? If you have, can you still say the Z is positively faster?
I found them to be VERY equal but if you still insist that the Z is faster, it would be by the slightest margine imaginable........................Like one rider chewing gum and the other not!
Thats my story and I'm sticken to it!.....................
