I just purchased a new 04 rancher at, I love it. The only thing is when my step brother drove it he thought it had a lot of noise to it when really getting on the gas. I noticed this when I first got it but was getting used to it. the noise sounds kind of like a knock but sound more like the tranny, just wondering if this is something to be concerned about.

If it is a clattery sound coming from the engine that is totally normal. I can hear mine really bad in esp right before i'm getting ready to shift. A have ridden 2 others and they both did the same thing.

My '04 Rancher 350 has a similar knock depending on engine speed and load.

Do the 400 AT's have a whining sound in 5th gear like the 350?

The 400 doesnt really have gears. The whining sound in 5th is either high engine revs, tires on hardpack, or you are too low of a gear.

I can't believe I asked such a question, I momentarily forgot all common sense when I asked about the 400 auto transmission in 5th gear.

Been a long week...
