Default steel wool for exhaust packing??

I read somewhere that steel wool can be used for exhaust packing, anyone know the truth to this? I'd asume it would be harder than fiberglass to "burn out" since it's steel, but how does it work as far as sound deadening?

I have used it, no problems. But I would go with Fiberglass, the steelwool is harder to work with.
