Periodic Maintenance on a 400EX
#1
It appears to me all the suspension parts are sealed... no fittings to grease. Are there any parts on the 400EX that should be taken apart and periodically lubed? I feel like I'm overlooking something just doing the filters, oil, and chain lube. For example, how often should the swingarm bushings be lubed?

Check the tire pressure every once in a while. not that i do that. Just something else to do.

If you ride in water alot then I would definitely break down the axle carrier and front spindles and regrease the bearings once a year.Same goes for swingarm,a-arms,and all suspension pivots.Dont forget the steering stem as well.If you primarily ride in the dry stuff then every other year would be fine.Lube cables every 6 mos to keep them working smooth.I check valve clearance every 100hrs personally.Overall check of all nuts and bolts every few rides just to make sure nothing has come loose or missing. Its nothing to invest time in preventative maintanence when you consider a whole riding trip could be shot if something breaks down due to neglect.

demp223 is right on the money. Get yourself a good manual and dont be afraid to work on your machine. The best investment you can make is a stand to put your bike on while you work on it. Then you get a mechanic chair so you can zip around.

If I was you I'd check and regrease your a-arms, pivot bearings and shock mounts at least twice a year if not more. Axle carriers at least once a year. Honda doesn't use lots of quality grease when building them. I did my 300EX after a few months of riding and everything was in desperate need of grease. It's much cheaper to invest time than money.
