Do a search on recon mods in the honda forum. you will find more posts than you can shake a stick at. Good luck with your project.
You can get a better muffler for it. Take off the racks. and put a K&N air filter on it for starters.

personally after yesterdays ride(15 miles with me and buddies trx300 2x4) i would say that the recon is light enough. it could shave a few pounds here and there but when we went creek crossing about 4 feet deep i was gettin thrashed around in the current. we had to walk one across then help pull the other across.
i would get a pro circuit t-4, and k&n filter, jet kit, take off racks, remove lights, take out stuff in tool box,etc......

The only thing extra I'd have on a Recon is a skid plate. You take all the fun out of the little machine when you weigh it down. (Besides things like jetting and exhaust) You could put a lower profile tire on the back.
Maybe you should just trade it for a 250ex.
