Thanks, I purchased new rear tires and beadlock wheels last week.

 

what do you guys think a old 250r would go for. With say just a pipe and filter. I checked ebay but cant get one for 15 hundred. I have to get to work very soon.. Not really looking for the "race ready" I like doing my own mods its half the fun. Do 250r respond to modifcations well? Does IMS have the oversized gas tank? I am interested in having a 250r and becomeing part of the "2stroke family "

You should be able to find a fair condition used 250R, with only a pipe for about $3000. Yes they respond very well to mods. A ported 270 (last bore) with a 38 mm carb, billet head, good reeds, open airbox, and a good pipe will easily outrun a piped 'shee in the drags and be able to trail ride with few headaches. Another plus is the lack of wheelspin compared to a banshee. A 250R is probably the easiest to ride two stroke out there, other than a blaster or polaris.

 

Very few quads respond to mods as well as the 250r.

 

How come i should stay away from 87's

 

The 87 just seems like the odd ball year to me, it still doesn't have a good clutch, but has a long rod crank, it has a different cylinder than any 85-85 and 88-89 motors and can't be ported to run like the others either. It just seems like a lot of the parts on the 87 are different and being a one year only part number, they are harder to find. It's like they tried to improve on the 85-86 and got it wrong, so they started over with the 88. The 87 is also the slowest 250R out of the hole, having the long swinger (less traction) and less rev than the 86. I personally like the 86, but only because it has a drag friendly chassis setup, with the strongest (heaviest) frame, and revs higher than the others. The 86 also has a higher top speed and different gear ratios that suite me for duning. Then again, I have had to upgrade to the 89 clutch after the lifter ball let go, and there are some real disadvantages that come with the short rod engine, even though it will rev higher and smoother. Also there are many aftermarket parts that won't fit the 86's. One last thing, with my ported 86, you can hear the knock of the piston trying to be forced through the intake by the shorter rod's steeper angles. That is a really unnerving sound to someone that isn't used to a ported 86 250R.

Well I just got back from doing a 5th gear wheelie with my 88 piped with a 15 tooth countershaft sproket! So I would have to say they wheelie pretty easy. Although my 86 is harder its still easy. I wish one gas tank lasted 3 hours!!! When I ride hard it only lasts for about 30 minuets (38mm carb, stock motor).

Both of my R's "idle", And dont vibrate much at all (with headstay). Most of the other stuff has been covered...

'88 and newer (power valve) Suz LT250Rs will be in your price range. This was the main competition for the TRX "back in the day." Parts and upgrades are available everywhere. Watch for cracked frames, especially around front shock mounts, and broken chain adjuster bolts in the swingarm. A lot of 2 stroke punch for the $. Good luck.

 

superfastwolv... that apperars to be a 250X BIG difference except the frame I think? maybe.......lol
