the splines on your shifter or shift rod are most likely stripped it should be an easy fix

nope, the splines are fine because the shifter isnt what isnt catching, i already checked that. it is internal.

take your clutch cover off and look at the lower left corner by the clutch, you will see a little star shaped thing, that could be worn out which is no big deal BUT you might have a bent fork or 2 and if so, you're gonna have to split your cases and replace them ($30 each) and possibly a gear or 2 ($30-$70 each). If you shift into gear and it grinds, you will definitly have to replace a fork.

oh yeah, if it is what I stated earlier, you might be in luck because I might be parting out an entire 400ex this week and I'll sell you the entire transmission real cheap if you are interested.

hey, i just opened up the clutch case and i looked at that star thing you were talking about. the star has 1 side with an inverted circle wich i am guessing is nuetral and there is another side thats flat wich i am guessing is a stop or something. the star isnt worn i dont think out but when i shift the roller isnt going into the bottom of the lobes. it stopes in between or on the points. also when i popped the cover off and a spring came flying out, were does it go?

yea it's most likely the shift fork, it's pretty common on the 400's. 2nd gear was out on mine when i got it and 3rd was out on a friend of mines. I paid $65.00 to have Honda inspect my transmission and another $250 in parts to fix it but like I said, I might part out a 400ex this week so dont go to the dealer just yet, I might be able to hook you up with a perfect transmission for real cheap.

the fork sounds right. the 400ex has an issue with losing 2nd gear, and sometimes 3rd. they jus get rounded out. i've been tryin to find somebody who can back-cut gears (an old street racing trick) so that they wont round out nearly as easy or as fast. this would save us some down time on our rentals and a ton of cash.
