I just replaced the rings and top end gasket in my 250X, and it is running great, but one thing is wrong and that is in the carburation... its smoking mostly just black smoke, im sure its running rich and either i need to move the needle clip up a notch or get a smaller jet and see what that does... what do you guys think??

What position is the throttle in when it smokes? less than 1/4, 1/4-3/4, WFO?

I just thought of something, if i removed the air box lid do you think this would cause enough air flow to make up for the richness in the fuel mixture... what do you guys think???

should only leave the clip on the needle where it was std

bike that age (like mine), may burn oil on start up as well.....something to watch

all it is, is worn seals around the valve stems allowing oil to seep down onto the piston when you stop the engine....on start up it burns it off....now worries though

replacing the topend gasket and rings should not require a change in the carby setup

r u running a std air filter?
exhast
mainjet?
airbox lid

anyway ride hard
and search the forums
this topic is well discussed

Its a big long story on how the carb is messed up and i dont want to go into it... but it has always been running rich, even with the clip in the leanest position.... so i think i might try the smaller Jet... thanks

Pudding,

Correct me if wrong, but if it were oil burning, wouldn't the smoke be white?

Pull off the carb, flip it upside down and bend the float so it is level when upside down. This should cure the problem. To high float level will make it run super rich no matter what jets you try as the fuel litterly gravity feeds itself in.
