Im in mass and you CAN get up and move your quad but what about mud???you stick the front end and you reverse out. easy and done. Also where i ride you have to keep on going due to pipe line people and others so there really isnt alot of time to get up pick it up and go. Yeah im probably gonna get a 400ex used if honda doesnt come threw with reverse...sad...im goin to have to take back my words against reverse if this happens...

ya but new is just to much for a 14 year old kid. my parents are paying but last year i was going to get a new 250 ex and they go for 3500 new and my parents were ok with that. i can get a used 400 ex now for 3500 and they dont mind that either. i think its well worth the loss of reverse. hey anyway where are you in mass?

New 04 400ex are being sold for 4500 plus tax and license. Considering your size and age this is the way to go. Now regarding new vrs used; the 400ex is very reliable provided the oil is changed regularly and the air cleaner is maintained properly. But how do you know for sure. I bought a used XR400 dirt bike from a friend who I thought was a good wrench. Turned out he wasn't. He did change oil regularly but he screwed up the air box maintenance. Dirt will ruin a top end and it did ruin mine. The new top end cost me $500 and I did the labor. Easy $800 to $1000 if the shop does it all. Also the 400ex can be damaged in a hurry if the oil level runs too low. You just never know for sure with used. So beg, borrow, get a job, wait awhile, whatever it takes; you will be very happy with a new 04.
Regarding reverse, if Honda adds reverse to the 400ex and if it is as hard to use as with the 300ex, you are better off without it. You learn real fast how to live without it.

yes that is true about dirting ruining a top end but i would have a test ride before i buy anything that expensive. i cant buy new its just too much..that i dont want my parents to spend. it would be different if they enjoyed quads but they seem to show no interest. its to bad too, my dad is a motor kind of guy and likes cars and trucks and stuff like that. he likes to go off roading in trucks though.
