Loss of power after changing choke cable and choke needle
#1
Hello, trying to find some information on what might have happend, or what i did wrong. The atv is a 2001 Rubicon with about 1300 miles on it.
This past weekend i decided it was time to replace a stuck choke cable. Figured after looking at it that it shouldn't be that hard of a job, but after reinstalling the cable and choke needle the atv no longer has any power. The atv starts and will idle without any noticable problems. It will even run on a level surface with out much problem, but if you stop the atv on an incline and try to go again it won't, even if you hold the throttle wide open it just sets there. One thing i have noticed is that when setting in neutral and you rev the engine it doesn't rev real high. I have picked up a new spark plug and stuff for an oil change that i'm going to try to do later in the week. If that helps i'll post back here to let everyone know. By the way, other than running rich the rubicon was running fine before i replaced the cable.
Thanks for any help that might be provided,

Sounds like the starter valve isnt seating all the way down when the choke is in the off position. Recheck the installation of that, it needs to go all the way , to close off the starter jet passage when off..or itll run rich. Check the spring for binding. You might need to lube the rubber piece, that goes into the carb, to make sure it slides easily , just a touch, of clean motor oil should do.

Is there any way to tell if the starter valve is seating properly? (other than it running right) I've done as mentioned and placed some clean oil on the rubber part, and have double checked that there are no kinks in the cable and that the spring isn't binding. I'm still having the problem with no power. Just for the kicks of it also tried an new spark plug and as i figured that didn't really help, but needed one for a spare anways.
I'm going to be out of town for the next couple of days and will try the oil change when i get back. The thinking on the oil change is that maybe its something with the transmission, but its time for the oil change anyways.

Check the oil level, before changing, and see if its too low.
Did you remove the top from the carb? The diaphram may be pinched or leaking. Is the air filter clean and reoiled? over oiled?
You can check for rich running, by removing the air box cover, and seeing if it runs better. Removing the lid will lean it out. Or pull the choke on, when its warm... It should start to burble and stumble, especially at idle.
Seems like you have two issues, it wont go up a hill, and it wont rev up in nuetral. How did the old spark plug look? OIly? black, and sooty?

Sorry for the delayed response, have been pretty busy lately. I still haven't had a chance to do the Oil change, but to answer your last set of questions. The oil level is good, I've had the top off the carb after the problem started and everything looked good. Is there a way to check the diaphram for holes?
I did find however that the pilot screw for the carb was out too far, i've purchased the service manual and have set the pilot screw to the intial setting listed, but really can't go much from there since i don't have a tachometer. The guess on the pilot screw being so far out was that the guy i bought off of instead of having the choke fixed just adjusted the carb.
As for the old spark plug it was pretty black and sooty.
The air filter is clean, but pretty dry going to pick up some oil for that when i get a chance.
Again Thanks for the help

Ok, just thought i would give everyone an update. We finally found the problem with my rubicon. Hondabuster was right it was 2 separate problems. The problem with it not having any power or as i put it before won't go up a hill was because one of the front brakes was locked up. As for the problem of the motor not reving, was 2 fold. First the carb was out of adjustment after the cable was replaced, but when we were looking for a cause we had the top fo the cab off to check the diaphram. Apparently when we installed the top we didn't put it on right and therefore it was allowing are to enter.
Now the rubicon is running better than it ever had since i bought it. Wish i would have changed the choke cable a little sooner. Thanks for the help.
