lots of times when i shift my rancher es into 3rd gear, it goes in without the "clunk" that is makes in all other gears. I mean it is practically a silent shift. Has anybody else experienced this?

You back off the throttle when upshifting, and 'blip' the throttle when downshifting, right? That usually makes shifting smoother.

Right on Motorhead

I agree when upshifting, but downshifting I usually just maintain de throttle position and it shifts smooth.

motorhead-

I'm not talking about making a smoother shift. I'm talking about making a SILENT shift. My rancher does not make the resounding "clunk" when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear. It is absolutely quiet and smooth. All other gears make the clunk sound.

Well, my point was that it could be making the 'clunk' sound because there is power being applied to the gears when you shift (if you don't back off the throttle). If you back off the throttle momentarily, it will take the load off the gears, and they will fall into place much more smoothly and silently. Then again, maybe the gear combination in the trany used to make 3rd gear just goes in more smoothly than the other gears.

Greetings,

My 450 ES is quieter in shifting between higher gears than lower gears -- I always attributed this to the fact that I'm generally rolling along pretty well by the time I hit 4th & 5th so the "power leap" (a new technical term) between gears isn't as great. But who knows, can't say it happens all the time (I'll pay attention next time I ride).

The dearly departed Gordon once explained something about the programming of the electric shift. It was something like "the computer knows where 1st, 2nd, and 5th are and can find them even when sitting still. But 3rd and 4th are accessed as part of a moving sequence, hence the difficulty of returning to Neutral if you shut it off in a higher gear."

Maybe relevant, maybe not. Maybe a real technical type will clear this up.
