hey i basically have the same setup as 440lw... Hot cam stage 1 wit airfilter 440kit 11:1 up'd oil tank lil porting job ... I JUST got it to run today and it was breaking up bad and the exhaust header started to get rlly hott fast and red.. I shut it off.. I think its the jet im having a problem with .. ( ITS STOCK) so what size should i go too.. also the oil was airated quite a bit.. Could this be cauz the bike was all apart in my garage for a long time and thier was no oil in anything? I had the side case off for like 2 months and had it all apart for a while.... ANY HELP WOULD BE APPECiated. Also should i just go buy like a jet kit? ANY HELP PLZ !

How was it at idle to like mid range? Mine seems to be ok in that area ,but up in the high rpm's it pops ,and backfires .Im gonna do exactly what the guy told me to do .165 main ,42 pilot ,maybe one more full turn out on the air/fuel screw ,and lower the needle clip one position. At least this will give me a good base line .And I can just do some minor tweaking from there .

Later ,

i would try 3 turns out on the fuel screw from lightly seated with the 42 pilot jet in.

00400ex, try the same jetting as i told 440. i actually run a smaller mainjet than that but everyone has their own preference. i wouldn't go to a 165 unless it was in the dead beat of winter and i ran with my air box lid off. but, a little big can't hurt the bike.
the headers are glowing so much from 1/8 to 3/4 throttle because you didn't move the needle clip down yet.

by the way, if the shop doesn't know what they are talking about, the pilot jet is a 21 series. they also make a 22 but it isn't for us. just for reference, these are keihin jets. i don't recommend buying a jet kit. just buy what you need.

Thanks for the help ,I appreciate it !!! I took the pilot jet oout yesterday ,and it is a 38 .Pretty small. Then I went to the shop to get a new one and the gut looking for the new one (size 42) said they dont have that style .Mine was either longer ,or shorter...I cant remember .There is one more place that Im going to try .Amuch bigger bike shop ,hopefully they will have it .

Thanks again,

Loren

exactly what i was talking about, the shop just doesn't know. make sure your threads are the same. the stock 38 pilot jet is shorter than the 42's. as long as the threads fit its the right one. i can't remember off the top of my head, but i would say the 42 is 1/4 inch longer.

Allllllllllllllllllllllllllrrrrrrightttttttttt !!!!!!!!!! Here is what I did...Lower the clip on the needle one pos ,put in a 42 pilot jet ,170 main ,and 2 3/4 turns out on the air/fuel screw .It seems to do quite well ,no more popping ,or backfiring .The only thing now is that if I wick on the throttle quick and hard ,it bogs for a second ,then raps out .Is that the pilot jet that yet needs to increase a bit more ?? Anyway ,thanks for all the advice ,I REALLY appreciate it !!!!!!

Ride hard............

Try turning your air/fuel screw in a 1/4 turn at a time till the low end bog goes away.
