Default 300ex problems

I took my 300ex to our local riding area over the weekend and as usual, it ran great. UNTIL, all of the sudden, it died. It restarted no problem but ran terribly. It only takes a little throttle before it dies. It runs okay with the choke on but with the choke off it sounds like its getting too much air. Air filter is good, gas is new and good, plug is new and good. Can someone tell me what to look at to find my problem. This is a 2000 model and the only problem I've had since new.

Its possible the riding around stirred up the setiment in the carb float bowl, and then got sucked up into the jets. Does it run better now? Drop the float bowl and look for crud in the bottom of it, and if you find stuff in there, the carb needs to be cleaned out. At the minimum, pull out the pilot jet and try looking thru it, like looking thru a straw. the hole is very small, and if you cant see light coming thru it, it will need cleaning out.
And if you find crud in there, put on an inline fuel filter, while youre doing the carb cleaning.

Help, I took my carb off. Completely cleaned it, including the jets, and reinstalled it. I took it for a spin before I loaded it to go to our local riding area. It ran great, until it happend all over again. I rode it for about 15 minutes and everything was fine. I turned and headed back to the house to load it and the symptoms came back again. Idles, but cuts out and backfires really bad when you try to give it more than just a little throttle. My question do you think this is a symptom of after it gets hot or did I maybe just suck up another piece of debris into the jets. I haven't put an inline filter on it yet. That is still in my plans.

Thanks,

Forrest

It is possible that some could have sucked back into the jets, but it sounds like a coil is going bad.

Sounds like the timing may have skippied a tooth. They idle great but pop and sputter when they are off time. You have to pull the rockerbox to check it, but that might be the problem. Timing chains wear out and that might be it. Not a huge thing but not fun either.
