Ah, Hondabuster, a mechanic you must be. Aside from your poor choice of nick name (my opinion) your methods are sound and true. For an experienced hand the methods you describe are the medicine required.

jamesNC, Ive had the nicname for years. When i was younger, I was awful hard on equipment, and my old man used to say, that i could even bust a honda. But he was a very good mechanic, and showed me how to do lots of things( after I busted them).

Honda tells you what torque to apply to all it's fasteners, plugs, and covers. Go by it.
You might try a small blunt chisel and small hammer, and tap it gently CCW. Stuff a piece of rag in the
hole to keep any chips from falling in, and when your done pull the rag out with needlenose pliers.
Change the oil again, too.
