usually, you'll get a bunch of blinks on the first gear indicator, anywhere from 1 blink, to 12 (?) the number of blinks can then be referred to a trouble shooting chart to tell you what it is. I'm not sure with the foreman, but on the recon, it's often the angle sensor. BUT what it really ends up being quite often is loose or dirty connections. On my recon i was getting the angle sensor code. the first thing the manual tells you to do is check and clean the connections.I'd try that first. unplug the wiring harness at the ECU (elec. control module, blow out the dust, add some silicone di-electric grease (it's like vaseline), then firmly push it back together. try the same at the angle sensor. once plugged back together, i wrapped mine with duct tape to keep it together, and to keep dust out.
ALSO, check battery connections, and make sure battery is charged. could be weak battery. I'm guessing with your cold weather, it might be that, altho i guess it wouldn't have started if the batt was too weak.

When it is really cold out, my 03 doesnt like to shift really reliably until it warms up.
Is it working now?
If you use the foot shifter, it will keep the es part from working until the key is turned off and then back on.
