How to clean an O-ring chain without breaking o-rings???
#1
I have been using PJI STICKY formula (the wrong stuff) on my chain, and i recently purchased the BLUE LABEL PJI. I have already degreased the sprockets, and swing-arm, but how do i degrease the chain without deteriorating the o-rings? I can't use engine de-greaser.
what about PURPLE POWER? will this harm the o-rings (dosen't say anything on the bottle about plastic and rubber)
ALso how do you remove the chain on a 400ex? Is there a master link? or do i have to grind down a pin, and hammer it out?
PS: i don't have a chain breaker.

There is a master link as far as I know. I also used the Sticky crap, now my swing arm is all blue and gooey. I'll not be using that on my new Raptor.
I would probably soak the chain in a degreaser over night, and use a tire brush to clean it up in the morning.

First the sticky ****(opps) stuff... You guys are putting to much on if it is flinging off. 2nd the chain... The is no master link. You will have to shorten the chain via the chain adjuster to get it off (or grind it,etc)... 3rd Cleaning... Y take off the chain? Get a chain scrupper kit it comes with the cleaner that is ok for o-rings and the scrubber mounts on the chain..

thanks guys..
what i did (got a large bowl of kerosene, worked my way all through the chain scrubbing, and all. Then after i was done, i waited for the kerosene to dry. Then i wiped off some dry cruty stuff off the chain.
Result: Looks like new, well kinda.
next time i am using sludge away and a cleaner kit.

The Yamaha manual advises kerosene to clean o-ring chains. Since 0-rings aren't bike specific, I would think that info would apply to any machine. If you'd use Chain Wax by Maxima you would not have the problem in the future. As soon as the carrier evaporates, all that remains on the chain is a waxy, non sticky lube which doesn't attract dust, even here in Az.

I think o-ring chain is overrated. More expensive, you never know if your lubing or cleaning it right, my 6 month old o-ring chain has stiff links in it already. Save your money and by non o-ring chain and lube it with whatever you want. Less drag with no o-rings
