Rancher Brakes

My 2001 4x4 Ranchers brakes are giving me some big headaches! I have hardly any front brake at all, and have adjusted both sides as much as they can go, so I think it's time for a rebuild. Does anyone have a link to a good set of instructions for doing this? I have also been considering replacing the brakes with a High Lifter Disc Brake system. anyone have any experience with them? My rear brakes work fine, except that my foot pedal sticks in the down position when I use it.
Any input is greatly appreciated!

Take them apart and clean them. There also may be some light rust inside because the drums will seal water inside of them.
They will perform just as well as disk breaks if you tare them down once in a while and clean them(once a week or month depending on how much you ride), the Honda drums do require some maint work. You just have to keep after them and they will work fine.
I have heard that the HL disk break kit is a bit shoddy. The discs don't line-up properly I guess(among other things).

The benefit from the disc brake set up isn't even close to being worth the cost. Your front brakes probably don't need a rebuild, just new sets of shoes and a good cleaning. The instructions in that link aren't bad but did you see how much grease they used? WAY too much and it's probably gonna get all over the nice new shoes. I guess they want to sell plenty of their grease to you.

When you get shoes for your Rancher use Ferodo pads for a Honda 300 4x4. The pads are a little bit longer. Another good choice are Armor Tech Shoes. Both shoes have a good bit of metal in them and hold up to heat better. Use Bel-Ray water proof grease for your lip seal on the drum it is the best that I have found for this.
Your foot brake take it off and use the Bel-Ray on it too.

Ya, those pedals get rusty on the frame boss they live on once in awhile. I've seen them actually rusted tight. Remove the cotter, and if possible to get more movement, remove the right footpeg. Work the pedal up and while applying pressure with a pry bar between the pedal and the frame.
