I spray it with PJ1 foam filter cleaner. Put it in a plastic bag (so it doesn't dry out) and let it sit a few minutes. Squeeze out the excess cleaner, then rinse it thoroughly with water FROM THE INSIDE OUT. Squeeze out he water (but don't wring it), then let it air dry. Always be sure it is completely dry before reoiling. I like super-tacky Maxima FAB for reoiling.

Some folks use an organic solvent to remove the old oil, but in my experience all this does is disolve the oil, and leave the heavier dirt behind. Rinsing it with water from the inside out, washes the dirt out.

The manual for the 450r recommends using kerosene to clean the foam filter. That is what I've always used to clean all the foam filters. I use a spray on foam filter oil. Less messy than the bottled variety.

I never could figure out why Honda recommends the Kerosene thing. Like I said, it dissolves the oil, but doesn't flush out the dirt. Just leaves it behind, trapped in the foam........go figure.

Smooth-How long you had your machines? And you never cleaned the filters before? No dust in Arkansas?

or u could just take an air compressor and put a air blower on it, take the foqm off the filter, spray it down good with carb clean, spray it with the air. put more carb clean and do the same thing a few times. then, let it dry and put her back in.
