99 Recon. power cutting out at high RPM
I have a 99 recon that I ran to death, haven't rode it myself for over 2 years (moved away for college and it's at dad's) but my dad still rides it around the horse barn for that kind of stuff.
My Problem: When I get on it in 4th and 5th gear sometimes it will lose power and make a hissing noise [ out of the muffler I assume ] and when i let off the gas for a second or two I get power back. But this is bad for going up steep trails. The guy at the shop said maybe an exauhst plug up? I don't believe it has ever had any real maintenance besides my dad just changin the oil. If he's even been doing that. What can I do? I just got a truck so I want to bring it down to school.
Any riders from around Athens Ohio?
Thx in advance.

also, good maintenance to remove the spark arrestor and clean it (don't remeber if these have that or not). now that i think about it, i think the recon has a drain bolt at the bottom of the exhaust pipe at the back. Honda tells you to remove exhaust drain bolt, plug up regular hole with a big rag, and then rev it hard several times. you'll see a lot of crud blow out.
but i ditto what the other guys said. my very first thot was plugged main jet in carb. i don't think any cleaners will help. you need to take apart and clean with compressed air, and also, sometimes i take a thin wire, like from a wire-brush, and poke the jet holes clear.

About the exhaust plug thing. That's what the mechanic at the shop near me was saying too so I'll try that out. Thx for all your help. I haven't had a chance to go home yet to get the wheeler or mess with it. But thx for everyones help. This forum is great.
