05 Rancher Surges
#1
I have an 05 Rancher ES. Just hit 550 miles on the odometer.
Heres the prob: While sitting at a stop with the transmission in 1st gear, the bike surges forward slightly (occasionaly). Seems the clutch is engaging momentarily. This just started within the last 50 miles. Already tried adjusting the clutch but no-go.
Anyone know what might cause this and how to fix it.
Thanks

I think the idle should be between 1300 and 1500 rpm, that's what it is on my 400. If it's much higher than that the clutch will begin to engage. You may also have a broken clutch spring if the problem has just started. Try lowering the idle slightly to see if the problem gets better. A tach would be a good idea first though, the proper idle speed is probably in the owners manual.

I didn't think of adjusting the RPM. Guess I will need to get a tach so I can set it to the correct RPM. I remember reading something about a "tiny tach" that is not to costly and would do the job.

I use an old automotive analyzer I bought for $12 at a yard sale, but a few timing lights also have a tach function as well, you don't have to be super accurate, if it's within 100 revs you'll be fine. One other thing, there's no easy place to put a sticker to get a reading with an optical or contact tachometer, so you need to use one that uses either the ignition pulse or the exhaust pressure wave.
