Default es shifting on 03 rancher sticking

i changed my oil the other day and whoa! it looked like chocolate milk. we ran a poker run about a month ago and i didnt think i got in anything that would make the oil this color. no bubbles or white color so i dont think any water got in the engine. i changed the oil, ran it for about 2 hours and changed it again. it came out clean this time.
anyway when i shift from 1st to 2nd with the es sometimes it dosent do anything. especially when i am going slower. if i am speading up and shift it does fine or if i am stopped it does fine.. i read something about taking the cover of the tranny and cleaning it. is this possible on my bike and if so what exactly do i need to remove.
thanks for reading and your advice
