Im taking over the loan for my cousin for his 2003 400ex. He has barely used this thing. He got it a year and half ago and put like 14-16 tanks of gas through it. Most of being the first two weeks he had it. The thing purrs like brand new. Two tanks of gas that went through it was by me. The thing looks brand new and still has the warranty and everything so im not worried. Im just curious is there any known problems that go wrong with this year I should be looking out for? Any suggested first mods I could do. This is my first quad so I plan on really taking care of it. Thanks alot. I do use search button for the person that will say that. Im just trying to find out any important things I might need to know.

The 400ex is rock solid. The biggest weakness on the 400ex in my opinion is the clutch cables don't last as long as some of the other quads out there. Keep a spare so you aren't left at the trailer while your friends are riding. You can switch a clutch cable in 10 minutes and it only costs about $12.
Safety Equipment
Nerf bars
Chest Protector
Helmet
Boots
Other advice
Remove the swingarm bolt and lube every 3 months. It is actually fairly easy if you do it often and a nightmare if you don't.
Remember that front a-arms are cheaper new than buying any replacement parts ($36 for lower, $55 for upper)
Pro-Tect swingarm skidplate (stainless steel and incredibly strong. The last one you will ever need)
Anti-vibe steering stem +1 so it clears the plastic when turning from side to side (I almost put this under the safety column as it will save your wrists should you hit a tree)
22" rear Razr 2 tires turn this into a machine that can go just about anywhere.
