Default Rancher 400 AT Top Speed?

My buddy's 2004 Rancher 400 AT is a great bike. We have added an HMF silencer and rejetted and it really helped the low end and mid range, but it didn't change the top speed at all. It tops out at 40 MPH. There must be a limiter of some type. Has anyone found out how to increase the top end or override the limiter? Is there a link I should be checking out with additional information and is the 40 MPH common? He's not looking for a lot of speed, but being able to run close to 48/50 would be nice at times. Thanks so much for any feedback.

my buddy's goes 52-55, sure your speedo ain't off, he was clocked by my speedo (350 es) and a gps unit, our speeds are dead on, or with in 1 mph accroding to gps, i top out at 52 cus of rev limiter and he walked very slowly foward

Thanks, no the speedo is fine, I have a Prairie 700 and we ride together, and it clocks out perfect with mine. When it hits 40 it just tops out there, it is obvious there is much more power there, we just can't get to it. It must be something simple.

Yeah we realize 40 mph is to slow. It has to be some type of a governor/ECM programing problem. Back to the dealer I guess. I was just hoping someone knew how to fix the darn thing.
