Crankcase oil
#2
Honda HP4 is a real good bet for the 400ex. When filling the oil tank I fill mine to the upper mark without the stick threaded in. I also look to see oil on the stick, run the engine , shut it off, then check it.

It is a dry sump engine! The oil from the external tank, flows into the "crankcase".........it is all the same oil (engine and transmission). You check your oil level on the dipstick on the tank.
By all means get yourself an owners manual, it has pictures of where everything is! When draining, you drain both the tank and the cranckase (bolt on the bottom of the tank, and another bolt on the side of the engine), and replace the oil filter. You fill the tank, start the engine, then check it again and top it up. Check the level often!

See my comments here, on oils. http://forums.atvconnection.com/mess...y&keyword1=oil
I think 10W30 might be light for very hot summer weather.
