Well I don't know then XracerZ, I guess like CoyoteRiverRaptor says. Try a new clutch. Be carefull when you pull the side cover off. Please post and let us know how you turn out... Wish it was something easier for ya.

not to sound stupid or anything but is this perhaps a known problem in the 04s?

My sons is an 04 as well. Yes, I have heard from many people that they have also had clutch problems. Clutchs are concidered wear and tear items like tires.
works great now.

Default 450R clutch question

well i fixed the clunking noise when shifting into 1st... my idle was set to high, neighbor came over with his YFZ450 and was checking it out. hes like... wow. "why does it idle so high?" i have no experience with 450's so i have no idea what they are supose to idle at. i thought maybe they idled higher then normal. so yea. fixed that. now my only other problem is shiftiing into 2nd. somtimes i go into neutral. all the other gears shift good. except into 2nd. maybe thats normal because neutral is inbetween 1st and 2nd. i donno. maybe i need to shift higher up when shifting into 2nd. is this normal when shifting into 2nd?

Two things. If your wearing boots and not use to it u might not be using your full range of motion, boots might be a little stiff. If you haven’t done and oil change in a while do one. I know when ever I do and oil change I notice much better shifting with my quad.

you should not run your idle too low .if you do you will cause premature wear on the auto decompressor of your cam. i have an 04 450 and yes it clunks . it is also difficult to find neutral while its running and hard to start if its in gear. havent had any problems with slip unless i over work it trying to ride difficult , or very technical trails.
