I have a modified 400ex right now. It is ported, new valves, high compression piston, racing cam, big gun pipe and header, revbox, works shox with rezzies, and lonestar +2 a arms.
My question how is it compared to the new 450's in the power, and handling compartment? also how much do u think i could sell my 400ex for. I do live in california, where everything is expensive.

I pick the EX when I do tight trail rides, like the San Bernardino Mtns. or Hungry Valley. The engine will lug down, and doesn't mind being ridden slow, in semi-technical terrain.
I pick the R for open desert. High speed handling is superb, like the bike is on rails. It is all rev though! It is geared tall so it doesn't make a good trail bike (although it has superb trail bike manners). It might make a good trail bike with some gearing changes.
If I need a bike that will do everything, I pick the Z400!

The "R" all the way. I thnk it makes a great trail machine as well as high speed desert riding. Where I live, one minute you are riding tight trails the next minute a nice hill climb and then high speed whoops/trails and the "R" handles them all. A quick change of the front sprocket and off you go.

Wait and see what the updates will be for 06. I would like to see a cross-country version with trail specific gearing. My only complaint about the R is that the rear end can get bouncy in the whoops. I had to set mine up very carefully. I will be going with aftermarket shocks at some point.

I would have to say that is an odd question. the 400ex versus the 450 is just not the right comparison, people get fooled because there is only 50 cc difference, but 400ex's are made for trails, 450's are mainly made for smooth handling and power distribution during races, so when you say versus, i would rather have the 450 but for trails put me on a 400 and ill be happy as a clam

This is probably true when talking stock vs stock, But just this week was are anual flat track race at our county fair, where there were 2 400ex's that handed EVERTHING their butts!! It was impressive for sure!! I have no idea what was done to either, and they were set up just for flat tracking. BUT, they just ran away from everthing else including 450's and Raptors. Rumor was that the fastest one was a 505 built by Four Stroke Tech! And it would pull the 450's down the straights! The only other quad there that might have been able to do anything was a totally tricked out flat trackin Banshee. (there again set up for JUST flat tracking) They did not run 2 stokes against the 4 strokes, but if they had, that would have been a very good race!!
