I just bored my 400ex to a 440. i put a stage 2 hotcam in also. i was just wondering if they 440's are known to leak oil from the head. i was thinking maybe just the head gasket is blown. thanks

OOh thats scary. Some 440's have pulled the studs out of the lower cases. That is normally at 12:1 compresion and higher.

You will probably have to get heavy duty studs put in. All 440's that I have seen leak at least a little.

When I installed my 440 kit I had a oil leak from the head as well. I took it back apart and torqued the head bolt to spec with a new gasket and didn't have a problem afterwards.

Its really more of a compression issue than the larger bore, but any additional energy created inside the cylinder will put additional stress on the head studs/bolts.

I actually had been running a true 12.6:1 for over two years with no noticable problems until recently.

Now I am debating between helicoils, larger studs, switching to larger bolts or ?

The problem seems to be completely from the stud pulling up thru the threads in the cylinder and tearing the threads up while it does it.

Curious if anyone is knowing what dia replacements are used in the HD stud kits?
