Default Will it hurt........250r

My dad and I just bought our first two stroke four wheeler and its a 1986 250r and it is pretty clean. My dad is being all protective of it and telling me not to top it out for a long time and dont race to see who has a faster top end. I was wondering if it will hurt the four wheeler to top it out, and because its old, will that have to do with ne thing about toping it out?

if ur not gonna run the hell out of it then why did he buy it? thats like buying a corvette to putt around in. running something hard has consequences but thats why we buy high performance machines. putting a new topend in a 250R costs about $150 and takes about 1 hour. if you blow it up... its not really that big of a deal.

It won't hurt it.......its just not good to run max rpms for a long long period of time.........if you just change rpm's every once in a while......you'll be fine........and like stated.......they are easy to rebuild......so who really cares??

2 strokes tend to be more likely to seize if held at WOT. If you and your friends tend to drag on wide open stretches and hit top speeds, then I could see your dad's concern. It is a performance engine though, nothing wrong with opening her up and stretching her legs As long as you aren't holding it at WOT for much more than 5 to 10 seconds, the engine will be fine. And yes, with age comes a higher probability something may break at any given time.

A properly tuned/jetted motor can be held at WOT without any problems!!!!

So they aren't more likely to seize at WOT than a 4 stroke?

an average 2 stroke will fail more often than a thumper because they do require more maint. but a well tuned smoker will run just as long and just as hard as any 4 stroke. if you are running a 2stroke HARD then just shut it off it is much more likely to sieze. you need to take a minute or two to cruze around to cool the piston and bore a bit.
