Rear sprocket on '03 400ex
Well sold all the 3-wheeeler's we had (250R) and bought a '03 400ex. Very happy! Extended warranty, Pro Circuit pipe, DG nerf bars already installed. Great buy for me for $3800!
Anyways. Haven't been around in a long time and have a question. I want to put a 36T and a new o-ring chain on. What should I expect in performance?

I just put a 39T on my EX (and wouldn't mind a 40). This is my trail bike for riding in the mountains (the single track trails up behind Lake Arrowhead!), so I wanted to gear it down for a little more torquey low end. My kids ride the EX in the desert, so I don't mind the slower top end as it might help keep them out of trouble.
I have never done a 36T. You are going to gain a lot of top end, and while the EX engine is a torquer you might lose so much low end that hill climbing becomes difficult (lots of rocky, technical hill climbs up there in the high desert). Depends on where you ride. If you stick to the open desert, and need to keep up with foks on faster machines, then maybe, but if you venture into the hills, I would guess it would be to much. Maybe a 37T as a compromise???
Was your 03 new??? If not, I hate to tell you, but Honda/Yamaha of Redlands was selling off NEW left over 04's for $4,000 out the door! I tried to tell all my friends, but none of them took advantage of it. If I had had $4,000 sitting around, I would have picked one up, seeing my 00 is getting old and tired.

Not new =( I called and they said they had them for $4200 + tax/lic and assemble fees! So, I bought used. It's fine. It has the extended warranty (till 6/06) and the pipe and DG nerf bars. I am happy will the deal.
As for the sprocket, we did the same swap on daughters old '82 250R and noticed no bottom end loss. Was happy. I hope this will be the same. If not, I will swap it back I guess.
I do ride the single trail behind Lake Arrow Head too! We take it from Apple Valley and ride it all the way up. 2hrs each way. FUN! Went with neighbor. They have 450R dirt bikes and 660 Raptor. Other neighbor has a 500 Predator. Keeping up was a task! Up the hills was fine, but the straight aways, they walked from me. Came back and told wife, I need a 660 Raptor. She might get the 400ex, well see =)
Kinda nice, we bought a new house (2005 model) and we just ride from the driveway =) I did a swap on the suburban from a 3:73 to a 4:10 and as told I would loose bottom end, and I swear I gained. I would recommend it 110%. I went to drive train direct and it was $620 out-the-door was the swap.
The gears should come next week, I will report back.

Going to a 4:10 in the Suburban is a LOWER gearing, and should give you MORE LOW END. I would do it in my Suburban, but I have a 4wd so the gearing change gets quite a bit more complicated (I presume yours is a 2wd???)
The change you are proposing for your quad would be a HIGHER gearing, so you could expect more top end but at the expense of low end.
