?s for Rancher owners..

What kind of motor oil are you guys using? Is it regular dino or synthetic? If you are using a synthetic oil, when did you switch and what brand are you using?
My Rancher is due for a second oil change and I used Honda's GN4 oil and from what I have read on oil forums, it breaks down in viscosity fairly quick. It's fairly high in price too....because of the Honda name.
Shell Rotella T is highly reccomended for a mineral based oil. Amsoil is highly reccomended for a synthetic blend but it's not readily available where I live. Moblie 1 MC oil is available and it's a synthetic.
So who runs synthetic?
Thanks.
Richard

I have studied oils extensively, and the only oil I choose is Maxima Extra, Ester Synthetic in everything (or Maxima Ultra if you are a racer). Play is safe and whatever you choose, make sure it is a Motorcycle Specific oil that is API SG/JASO MA!

The car/truck oils are NOT fortified to be used in an engine that has an integrated transmission. You will get lots of testimonials from folks who have run one of them, but how many of them have torn down their engines regularly to check for damage???? Play it safe, why take a chance????

i agree with reconranger. make sure the oil you use is API SG/JASO MA certified.
Amsoil and Mobil 1 are good synthetics, Valvoline makes one too now i think. I use synthetic oil, because it resists the high-heat breakdown that most cheaper oils have a problem with. The rancher is an air-cooled engine, which means it reaches very high temperatures at some parts of the engine (especially when the cooling fins are caked with mud )

here is a link to the results of an independent test, published on Amsoil's website. I use amsoil because it's readily available and i believe to be high-quality, and the price is about the same as the honda GN4, so it's really a no-brainer.
again, when choosing oil always find a MOTORCYCLE oil safe for wet clutches meeting JASO MA and API SG or higher ratings, and use the owner's manual recommended viscosity.

The Mobile 1 synthetic "motorcycle" oil is readily available here locally. All the Honda shop carries is Honda brand oil and from what I have read, it's not that good for bikes or atv's.
The Rotella is highly reccomended in a dino oil because it is made for high stress conditions in big diesel engines. As for Amsoil...I would have to order it online as it is not readily available.
From tests I have read, the Mobile 1 MC oil is on par with Amsoil and better than Honda synthetic.
Thanks for the replies guys.
