Im new to this quad thing, and im currently in the market for onem specifically a honda. Ideally, I would like a 400ex, and the impression I ve got from reading this forum is they are nearly bulletproof. But herre is the dilemma, my cousin is looking to get a utility quad with 4wd, along with his boss who just bought one. My question is how trail worthy is the 400ex, with the appropriate tires, compared to a 4wd atv?

400EXs are good bikes. my brother has one and one of my freinds does too...so, ditto on all the points.
also, remember that sport bikes have a lower ground clearance(which contributes to their better handling); you will likely get snagged on something before the 4wds will....reverse will be helpful in some cases, but it doesnt always save you from getting off the bike and getting it unstuck on whatever its caught on. i would prefer a 400EX over big, heavy ute anyday for trail riding or just jacking around. if i was into mud, id go with a 4wd....
but even so, ive seen some of the biggest, baddest muddin' machines get stuck and winches broke, requiring a bunch of people and a couple bikes to pull them out before; so even with a mudder- you are not immune to getting stuck. some hole, somewhere will eat your machine....
i wish that some OEM would make a lightweight HP 4x4 soon. (dont even say wolverine).

The 400EX is an awesome trail quad. The thing about riding with utilities on something like a 400EX is that you'll want to be in front cause they are so fun to ride at a faster pace. Don't get me wrong, a 400EX is more than capable of going at a slow pace all day long its just that you (the rider) will love the faster pace with the power delivery and handling that the 400EX has to offer (especially over a utility).

The 400EX will be a good choice for you. On regular trails the utes won't be able to keep pace over the course of a days ride. On the other hand, throw some mud, snow, or steep, rutty hill climbs in the mix and the tables turn. I have had to ask a ute rider for help on several occasions. Yes, those 4wd with winches can come in handy!
