Yes, but did you also drain the carb down the bottom of the float bowl?

 

well i got it started today!!! got a new spark plug and drained the gas from the carb.Fired right up. Thanxx

My buddy had the same problem. If you do alot of riding in the winter it will foul the plugs out really fast. They way he fixed the problem was he put a different pilot jet in the carb, and now has no problem with the plugs fouling out.

Bad gas....

 

I gave up and took it to the dealer, apparently when you store the bike, you need to drain the carb and put some fuel stabilizer in the gas tank, otherwise gelatinous goo buils up in the hoses and jets and clogs the carb.

 

I think the dealer is feeding u a line, 400ex's need to have extra/full battery power to start them if there is something wrong in the power train like

loose exhaust
loose airbox / dirty
loose wiring / plug
incorrect plug
stale gas / blocked tube for tank breather
low battery / loose connections
cold temp outside / wrong choke setting


Check the exhaust and air box for tightness and put a new plug in with a full tank of fresh gas and jumpstart it with a car and adjust choke correctly and i bet it'll fire right up the next time this happens.

always use your back up starting system to help you determine if there is something really wrong, which for the 400ex is getting a good push from a buddy and popping the clutch in first or second gear. Try it next time!

 

That is true or can happen, but its not normal for a short time storage (well maybe the jets could gel up pretty quick if it was poor or old fuel to start with) and more typical of a long term one.

I guess a lot of it depends on luck as well since I know of more than one that had not been used in almost a year that started up fine once the battery was charged up. I also have seen guys dumping $30 or more of stabil into their boats around here, and others that dont even coat the cylinders or add anything and they all have no admitted problems.

Then I had a sportster that got so clogged up the carbs needed rebuilding, and same thing once when the marina missed the stabil, so I guess its easier to just be preparred than gamble.

On the 400 I wont say I never had trouble as not to jinx myself, but I know for sure that if you dont charge up the battery there is a good chance it wont be starting even if there are no other problems. It seems that the starter does not have much room for error as the starting speed isnt much above the min speed, and if the battery is a little weak it can easily cause it not to start.
