Yeah that stuff can get you by surprise. Me and my cousin were out riding at tower city, and it was my cousin's first time out with his suzuki eiger, and really the first time he rode an atv since he had 3 wheelers like 8 years ago. I let him go first when we started getting into a watery muddy section, and he starts going into some standing water that LOOKS about a foot deep and 80 feet long. He was about 15 feet into it when I started to follow him in, then all of the sudden the front of his 4x4 drops another 2 feet down with water up to the handlebars. That was the quickest I ever backed out of a mud pit. He got REAL lucky, he got some water in the airbox, but nothing got sucked into the engine.

Default recon going trough mud

He was lucky, just like i was yesterday. I was going through the same water hole i sent you a pic of. After about 6 passes trough it i decide to see how deep it was i waded out and the water was up around my belly button so i go back and see the gas tank to make sure its not over it and its not so I drive out there and all of a sudden i hear sputter and then it died on me!. I was making sure the water did ot get over the gas tank and it wasnt but it still died why? So mean while while I floating down the sream on my recon my freind is sitting there laughing at me ! once i pushed it out of 3 feet deep water i put it on dry land and try to sart it for 10 mins straight then it starts right up because i got all the water out of the engine, but what I cant figure out is why it died on me?
Granted I was going a little deeper than I had planed but it still was not over the gas tank. What year is your cousin eiger and where you driving the recon when he all most killed his new quad?

The snorkel is at the gas tank, but not above it, it's actually below inside a cavity. That's why I said to keep the water level below the seat to be safe. If you got water in the engine you should do an oil change NOW, if you got water in there it could have easily made it's way into the crankcase and into the oil, which can cause lots of damage if left alone. If you drain the oil and it looks normal you're good, but if it comes out with some milky white looking stuff you should do a few oil changes with 5 minutes of riding in between to make sure you get all the water out.

Do you mean the water didn't go above the top of the gas tank, or the water didn't touch the gas tank at all?

Did you check the airbox for water? If there's more than a couple inches in the bottom you should change the oil. If there's water in the airbox that means you went in too deep and water started getting pulled through the snorkel.

I changed the oil and it was not milky white, but changed it any way because I had to change the oil and just to be on the safe side. There was about one fourth of an inch of water in the air bx when i looked in it yesterday. Needles to say I am never going in the water hole again! I could have lost my breand new atv!! Did you ever bury your recon in mud or water? How often did you change the oil also? And the water was about an inch away from the bottom of the gas tank.

You're fine then. My guess about the stalling was an electrical problem, if water gets on a wire that wasn't properly insulated and waterproofed it could have stalled from that, then started back up once it dried off. Don't sweat it man, you didn't mess anything up, so don't let that scare you from riding in water. You just gotta be careful and give yourself at least an extra foot in case the creek bed drops and you don't see it ahead of time.

I never swamped my recon, I came close a few times but the outerwears on my k&n saved my @ss by keeping the water in my airbox from getting sucked in.

I think I changed the oil in my recon about every 20 hours or something like that, really I just went by the color of it. I used silkolene oil, which has a blue colorant in it, and basically the oil tells you when it needs changed, because the colorant will fade out once the oil breaks down. When the oil starts to get dark looking it's a good time to change it.

When I put it on dry land i puches the start button and it would not start but was sptting water out. So I guess that water must have got in.Right?
