Lots of posts on ES problems. Go with the foot shift instead.

Nice machine!

Maybe try searching the term "ES", and you will turn up lots of posts. There are at least a couple each week.

Just keep it simple, and shift with your foot.

A Warn 424 is a must have for this machine. It turns it into a selectable 2wd/4wd.

ES is found on the Recon, Rancher 350, and Foreman (old 450 and new 500). You will find lots of folks who swear it's a great system, and they never have any trouble. Yet, if you watch the forum over the years, every week there are one or two new post asking about what to do about some ES failure. You are just going to have to go back and search through the posts to find them.

I tried an advanced search of ES and it didn't seem to work. Just scroll through the old posts and look for titles with ES problems. They are sometimes hard to spot, just from the titles. This will get you started:

Now, how many posts do you see about problems with a foot shift manual????

I love my Rancher ES. I know several people who own Hondas with the ES system. None of them have ever had any trouble with them. I feel that there are benefits of ES and manual. I bought mine used so I would have taken ES or manual. Didn't have any preference when I bought it. Now that I have the ES, I'm glad I have it. Crossing deep water or mud, I can keep my feet dry and keep shifting. Up here in Maine, we have some very cold winters. So, with huge pac-boots on at 30 below, I won't have to struggle to get my toe under a foot shifter.

I don't have the 2wd selector on my Rancher and don't plan on getting one. I feel that having it in 4wd all the time is good. It doesn't steer hard and in fast corners on loose gravel or mud, the 4x4 keeps a nice 4 wheel drift through the corner instead of an out-of-control fishtail like I've had with 2wd machines.

My 2 cents, Kev
